One Simple Thing Could Strengthen Your Game

Do you take any supplements to support your workout routine? If you said yes, it is probably one of the usual suspects  - protein powders, energy bars and perhaps, a multivitamin. What we often forget is, that in order to optimize your workout routine, your recovery time is critical.  Without proper rest and recovery, you could be straining your muscles or injure yourself. Eventually, this could hinder your fitness plan, and cause a break in your training.

This could come as a shocker - did you know that antioxidants play a major role in muscle recovery? They protect your cells from free radical damage. Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable atoms produced naturally by your body from daily activities such as breathing, and digestion. Your body produces more of them during intense training, exposure to pollution, if you are a smoker, or getting insufficient sleep.

During exercise, for example, your muscles use 10 to 15 times more oxygen than when at rest, resulting in a higher level of circulating free radicals. Without sufficient antioxidants to protect your cells from oxidative damage, you may experience:

  • Muscle damage

  • Fatigue

  • Decrease in performance

  • Inflammation

  • Premature aging

  • Low energy/vitality

  • Dull complexion

  • Fall ill more frequently

But I can get antioxidants from my food riiiiight?

Yes, there are many food sources of antioxidants, which are especially abundant in orange/red/purple coloured fruits and vegetables. 5-9 servings of fruit and raw/steamed vegetables daily, or 200ml of fresh orange juice is recommended, to meet the 200mg serve of mixed antioxidants for protective health benefits. Even if you manage to consume the recommended intake of fruits and veg, you may not necessarily absorb all the antioxidants the fruits/vegetables contain.

In addition to diet, you also need to consider your lifestyle. There is a constant internal balancing act of free radicals being produced and available antioxidants to repair the damage they cause. If you are very active, work long hours, sleep less than you should, smoke, or easily fall sick, your need for antioxidants is higher.
