Turmeric, a member of the Ginger family, is the popular spice that gives curry dishes their yellow-orange hue. Being often associated with curry, many forget that as a plant, Turmeric has a very long history of medicinal use, dating back thousands of years. Indian Traditional Ayurvedic medicine uses Turmeric to treat indigestion, purify the blood and relieve intestinal gas, cough and arthritis, while Traditional Chinese medicine uses Turmeric for issues of abdominal pain, menstrual irregularities and swellings.

Modern research in recent years have demonstrated that Turmeric has many health benefits. The main benefit comes mainly from its anti-inflammatory qualities due to compounds called curcuminoids - the most important being curcumin. Curcumin is also a strong antioxidant that can neutralise free radicals and stimulate the body’s own antioxidant mechanisms.

However, curcumin, on its own, is not easily absorbed in the body. This is a problem that has been known for some time in natural health circles. It is recommended that to maximise absorption, turmeric should be consumed with small amounts of black pepper, in a dish/meal with healthy fats (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, etc). The piperine in black pepper improves the bioavailability of curcumin by 1000 times. As curcumin is fat-soluble, it needs fats to be absorbed properly into the body.

For maximum absorption in the body, turmeric powder needs to be consumed with small amounts of black pepper, and beneficial fats.

  1. Turmeric-Eggs : Scramble eggs with ½ tsp turmeric powder, salt and a pinch of black pepper.
  2. Turmeric Smoothie: Blend 1 cup of coconut milk with 1 frozen banana, ½ tsp of turmeric powder, 1/3 tsp ginger powder, 1/3 tsp black pepper, in a blender. Adding mango enhances the taste of this smoothie. Enjoy!

Suggested daily intake : ½-1 teaspoon (1-3g) for generally healthy adults.

As a rule, turmeric and curcumin supplements are considered safe when taken at recommended doses (a statement by University of Maryland Medical Center). As no studies on the effect of turmeric supplements on children have been done, there is currently no recommended dose.

According to the National Institutes of Health (USA), turmeric may slow blood clotting. Medical literature has advised against consuming turmeric for people who will be undergoing some form of surgery. In addition, people who have gallstones / gallbladder issues are also not advised to consume turmeric.
