Matcha is NOT your typical green tea. Although both Matcha and green tea come from the same plant Camellia sinensis, Matcha tea is much more nutrient-dense than green tea. You will be able to recognize Matcha from its much brighter green color and better taste (almost no bitter after-taste). Comparing nutrients, 1 cup of Matcha tea = 10-15 cups of green tea, approximately.

The tea bushes for Matcha are grown in shade (sheltered from direct sunlight), thus leaving the leaves with a brighter shade of green and higher amounts of chlorophyll and L-theanine amino acid. L-theanine amino acid is known to reduce anxiety and stress, and when combined with caffeine, induces a calmer, yet more alert, state of mind.

The finest Matcha is produced from young and tender leaves hand-picked during the very first harvest of the season (first flush). The tea leaves are then steamed, dried and then milled into fine Matcha powder. First-flush Matcha is the Matcha of choice, as it contains significantly more chlorophyll and amino acids (including L-theanine) than the leaves that are picked later in the season. The more chlorophyll, the more vibrant green the powder will be. And the more L-theanine amino acid, the sweeter (umami plant sweetness) the Matcha will taste.

  1. Promotes Relaxation & Mental Alertness, A Healthy Alternative to CoffeeMatcha, being rich in amino acids, specifically L-Theanine, leads to a state of relaxed alertness and helps relieve stress. Matcha contains up to five times more L-Theanine than common black and green tea. Although Matcha does contain caffeine, the calming effect of L-theanine knocks off the “jittery” effects of caffeine, thus promoting clarity of mind without causing nervous energy typically associated with coffee.
  2. Improves DetoxificationSince Matcha is carefully shade-grown, it has significantly higher levels of chlorophyll than other common green teas. Chlorophyll is known to be a natural detoxifier; it clears the body of toxins and heavy metals, and promotes the blood's capacity to deliver oxygen and other nutrients to cells.
  3. Helps Increase Metabolism According to a study featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Matcha consumption helps to increase body thermogenesis (the body’s rate of burning calories) from a normal 8-10% daily energy expenditure to 35-45% of daily energy expenditure.
  4. Helps Prevent Cancer The naturally occurring polyphenols known as catechins in Matcha are anti-carcinogenic and exhibits free-radical scavenging activity, thus inhibiting tumor cell development. One specific catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a potent cancer fighter, makes up around 60% of the catechins in Matcha. Authentic Matcha provides a higher concentration of antioxidant catechins, including EGCG, than brew-able green teas.
  5. May Benefit Heart Health Studies have suggested that green tea catechins may prevent cardiovascular diseases, and also lower the cardiovascular mortality rate.
  6. Strengthens Immune SystemMatcha green tea powder is rich in antioxidants, particularly Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) which assists your body's production of T-Cells that reduce inflammation and fight pathogens.

Premium Matcha can be enjoyed on its own, with just hot water.

(A) To make hot Matcha Tea :

  1. Add ½ tsp (1g) of Matcha powder to a small cup or bowl
  2. Add about 150ml of water at about 80 °C
  3. Stir well with a spoon or whisk (with a bamboo whisk) until frothy. Serve immediately.

(B)To make hot Matcha Latte (with milk):

½ cup hot water (not boiling)

½ cup organic coconut milk or almond milk, warmed up

1 teaspoon matcha powder (culinary grade recommended)

1 teaspoon raw honey

  1. Add Matcha powder to a small amount of hot water in a mug or matcha tea bowl
  2. Stir quickly with a spoon or use a bamboo whisk, to make a thick, green paste.
  3. Pour hot coconut milk/almond milk and water into the paste and stir. Add raw honey.

If you're using a milk frother, place on the top of the latte and turn it on, allowing the latte to froth and foam until your desired texture. Enjoy hot or warm!
